The HEMINGWAY SOCIETY MEmBERS |
Hemingway Café Club
We’re kicking it off in the summer of 2026 for a very specific reason. Over the past decade, we’ve raised an average of $6,000-$7,000 per year to support research and conference attendance for students and independent scholars—a very healthy sum, but not necessarily the amount that allows us to complete the work we’d like to. While we are very grateful to our regular contributors, we’d also like to ask Society members to consider an annual donation of $60 on top of their annual dues. At an average of 600 members, $60 per member would allow us to raise $36,000 per year. Not coincidentally, that is the exact amount we were short in 2026 when it came to funding our Hinkle and Stoneback Travel Fellowships for the Toronto conference. Out of more than 60 Hinkle and Stoneback applicants, we were forced by budgetary constraints to turn down half of them. If every Society member pledged just $60 more per year, we could offer funding to twice as many deserving students and expand the reach of the Stoneback award as well. We’ve asked before. For more than a decade in the Hemingway Society Newsletter we’ve invited Society members to consider an annual donation. We’ve come to understand why it might not be working. Writing a $60 check all at once isn’t easy in this unsteady economy. So we think we’ve found a solution. We’re asking members to pledge $5 per month instead through automatic withdrawal. $5 a month, not coincidentally, is about the price of a single cup of coffee. So buy a coffee for Hemingway and become a member of the Hemingway Café Club. Thank you for your generous support of the Hemingway Society and its initiatives! |
